Functional principle
An EMAT generates ultrasonic waves within a metallic and/or ferromagnetic test object via interaction of high-frequency eddy-current, generated by a coil, with magnetic field, induced by a permanent magnet or pulsed electro-magnet. Depending on configuration of the eddy-current coil either Lorentz forces or Magnetostriction are utilized for introducing sound energy into the test object. Both, pulse-echo and through-transmission schemes can be implemented for non-destructive testing purposes.
Intended use
EMAT is suitable for a wide variety of NDT applications, such as thickness measurements on boiler tubes & heat exchangers. It can be applied for manual and automated corrosion testing on pipelines and storage tanks. EMAT does not require couplant for transmitting sound, which makes it very well suited for inspection of very hot and very cold parts. EMAT can inspect through coatings and are not affected by pollutants, oxidation, or roughness.
Electro Magnetic Acoustic Transducer (EMAT) is an ultrasonic testing technique that generates ultrasound waves directly in the part inspected. It can be utilized for couplant-free thickness measurement and flaw detection
